Project Background

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 Richter scale struck Nepal with epicentre Gorkha on 25 April. On 12 May, another earthquake magnitude of 6.9 Richter scale struck with epicentre Dolakha district. A total number of 8,659 (male 3887, female 4771 and 1 unrecognized) death casualties and 21,150 injuries (male 6890 and female 6083) throughout the affected districts in Nepal were caused by this earthquake disaster. Kathmandu Valley covering three districts (Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur) was also badly impacted. From the very beginning of the devastating earthquake in Nepal, DEPROSC-Nepal in the partnership with OXFAM began to deliver emergency humanitarian services to earthquake affected communities within and outside the Kathmandu valley; followed by the initial rapid assessment. DEPROSC, as a partner of Oxfam to plan and implement EFSVL interventions in the valley continued to participate, support, and contribute in the effort of Oxfam on emergency response and early recovery.

In the partnership with Oxfam, it has completed first and second phase of emergency response and early recovery in Kathmandu and Lalitpur districts in March 2016. The successful completion of EFSVL intervention in Kathmandu valley has contributed to revive the livelihoods of earthquake affected population benefitting 4283 HHs in response phase and 1500 HHs in transitional recovery phase. The initial two phases of the project addressed critical and immediate needs of affected community, especially related to food, through various EFSVL interventions. The further joint need assessment done at the end of August 2015 and rapid Households Economy Analysis (HEA) Survey in October 2015 done in the valley portrayed that there is a crucial need to continue livelihood recovery support with special focus to poor and ultra-poor to promote their diversified livelihoods so that they will be more resilient to shocks related to livelihood and food security in future. Based on the community need assessments and learning from the One Progrmme Approach (OPA) the project decided to extend its activities to Bhaktapur district as well in its third phase.

Thus, the third phase of Emergency Response to Nepal Earthquake is being implemented in Kathmandu (Nagarjun, Dakchinkali, Kirtipur and Chandragiri municipalities), Lalitpur (Mahalaxmi and Godavari municipalities), and Bhaktapur (Nagarkot municipality) districts to carry out EFSVL interventions covering the basic recovery needs of affected communities related to EFSVL following WASH interventions.

Project goal and Objectives


To mitigate the adoption rate of negative coping strategies and rebuild long-term resilient livelihood among earthquake-affected populations


  1. To reach most vulnerable populations whose livelihood is threatened by earthquake, and assist them in recovery with livelihood support inputs.
  2. To increase employment opportunity of affected households to meet their immediate basic needs.
  3. To support earthquake affected low income families by promoting small, medium and micro enterprises.
  4. To provide technical support to district level stakeholders and clusters on emergency food security and vulnerable livelihood.

Project activities

The following activities will be initiated to meet objective of the project:

  • Promotion of improved kitchen garden (350 HHs)
  • Commercialization and promotion of vegetable & fruit enterprise(600 HHs)
  • Rehabilitation/establishment of community infrastructures through cash for work/ cash for assets for community assets creation (400)
  • Livestock promotion, cattle shed support and breed improvement for increased productivity (500)
  • Animal campaign (5 events)
  • Support to community for restoring their employment and enterprises special focus for single women/women headed business through Small, Micro and Middle Enterprise (SMME) Promotion (215 HHs)
  • Orientation to vegetable grower on marketing of vegetables (120HHs)
  • Market Development workshop (4 events)
  • Support to strengthening the cooperative through capacity building on cooperative management (2 cooperatives)
  • Value chain study on potential commodity with respect to income generation hiring the consultant
  • Repair/Maintenance/Establishment of collection centre (1)
  • Community level gender awareness activities
  • Self-defence Training to young girls and women in community
  • Community level awareness on legal rights of women an protection

Expected outputs

  1. 4883 HHs are supported to meet their basic needs in the first 12 month of the relief phase (This activities has been already completed during emergency response and early recovery from Jun 2015 to March 2016).
  2. 3600 HHs are supported to promote immediate resumption of normal assets and livelihood activities and contribute to early recovery.
  3. 3 Districts and community level stakeholder are able to develop and can implement contingency plans to address upcoming shocks and crisis.
  4. 3700 poor, socially excluded and vulnerable women and men have built more resilient livelihoods through broadening their livelihood activities, better accessing and controlling assets (use of remittance) and resources (financial, environment services).
