Human trafficking is one of the major challenges in a poor countries like Nepal where there is high rate of poverty and illiteracy. In the past decade, lot of work has been done to minimize human trafficking and both government and non government organizations are putting their effort to combat this. However, the results show that the traffickers have changed the forms of trafficking rather than minimizing it. In this background, Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has initiated to Pilot Anti Trafficking Project in Ramechhap district with the concept of SAFE Migration to tackle changing forms of trafficking.
This project will be of one year duration and will focus on two different aspects of trafficking
- Awareness on Trafficking in person and
- Advocacy for legal reform and effective implementation of laws against trafficking in person
Initially the project started in four VDCs of Ramechhap district where another project SEEP is already been implemented with support from LWF.
The pilot project has started on 16 August 2007 and will continued till 15 June 2008. After successful completion of pilot phase, the project has been extended to two additional VDCs of Ramechhap district and will continue till 15 December 2008.
The project has become successful in establishing information desk at each VDC which is the main information hub for the potential migrants. The information desk operators at Manthali (the district headquarter) are stationed in the District Administration Office, where the people who want to go overseas visit for the purpose of making passport. This desk is helping them get necessary information about the precautions they have to take from being trafficked.
