Water Source Protection Project (UN-OCHA)
The project was implemented in partnership with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA) from March 12, 2010 to September 11, 2010. It targeted 1,330 households in the Rokayagaun and Nayakwada VDCs of Jajarkot district, which were considered vulnerable to a diarrhea epidemic, particularly following the outbreak in 2009.

| Achievements | A total of 56,000 ORS sachets were distributed to 9,358 households across 10 VDCs of Jajarkot. A total of 14,000 brochures and 900 calendars, containing 4 key WASH messages, were prepared and distributed throughout the project VDCs. Wall paintings were completed at 7 locations, and hygiene information boards were installed at 3 sites. A speech contest was held in Rokayagaun VDC, and street drama was performed at 8 different locations within the same VDC. Local people developed skills in water treatment and ORS preparation. Local people participated actively, with support from stakeholders at various levels. No deaths and very little illness from diarrheal disease were recorded in the project VDCs. Bio-engineering work at each water source — including plantation, dry walls, retaining walls and cross drainage — helped improve water availability and protect the source from long-term damage and contamination. |
