Water Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion. Humanitarian Capacity Improvement Project
The Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion — Humanitarian Capacity Improvement Project ran from May 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009 across 15 VDCs of Dhanusha, aiming to reduce the impact of water-, sanitation- and hygiene-related disease outbreaks among vulnerable communities in the district.

| Achievements | A two-day training at the district headquarters raised awareness and built skills among sanitation and hygiene promoters. Training held in the project VDCs saw strong female participation, at 86%. A contingency plan formulated at the district level became the guideline for responding to disasters (flood) in Dhanusha. Street drama conveyed messages on water purification methods, the importance of handwashing, the critical moments for washing hands with soap, ORS preparation, and toilet use, among other topics. Interaction with WASH actors from other districts allowed for the sharing of experiences and challenges. Global Hand Washing Day was celebrated on October 15, 2009, at a local school in the project VDCs. People living in the target VDCs gained greater capacity to prepare for and respond to WASH-related disasters. |
