Integrated Village Development Program

A proposal request to implement an integrated village development programme was approved by the Canadian Cooperation Office (CCO), Lazimpat, Kathmandu, in early 1995. In the initial stage, this support was highly meaningful in translating our vision into action through the implementation of group-based savings and credit programmes, vegetable farming for both household consumption and income generation through the sale of surplus produce and other community infrastructure development. Rural people in the Bhorle and Sarseu VDCs were facing difficulties in accessing potable drinking water and basic electricity services. Agro-processing was also a time-consuming and burdensome task for women in rural households.

AchievementsDEPROSC-Nepal was truly delighted to receive this opportunity from CCO to implement a programme through which rural inhabitants benefited from these basic services.

A number of savings and credit groups were formed and trained, which enhanced rural people’s access to basic financial services. Producer groups were also formed and provided with improved seeds and technologies. Rural inhabitants benefited from a 5-kilowatt micro-hydro system that supplied electricity to 60 households in Sarseu. Moreover, the an agro-processing unit established by utilizing electricity during the daytime not only reduced the workload of women but also created income-generating opportunity.
