Implementation of Women Literacy Classes

DEPROSC-Nepal was privileged to have the opportunity to implement one of its initial projects. The organization was assigned to facilitate and oversee the implementation of a six-month-long Basic Literacy/Adult Literacy Programme in 2 VDCs across two remote districts.

Identifying beneficiaries, conducting pre-tests, arranging logistics, ensuring the regularity of classes, conducting proper post-tests, scoring, and guiding the literacy facilitators were the major responsibilities of DEPROSC-Nepal.

One of the key learnings from the implementation of this project was understanding how even a small intervention can significantly improve the teaching-learning environment. At that time, electricity had not yet reached either of the project areas, and the programme had to be conducted in the evening, which was the only free time available for rural women. The programme budget included the provision of two lanterns for each class; however, these were not sufficient for middle-aged women to see properly during the sessions. As a result, the participation of tired women in the classes was not encouraging. DEPROSC-Nepal’s simple initiative of replacing the lanterns with Petromax lamps drastically changed the learning environment at the centres.
