Community Based Water Supply and Sanitation Project
With financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank, the Government of Nepal implemented the Community-Based Water Supply and Sanitation Project from 2004 to 2010, aiming to alleviate poverty by improving the health and quality of life of people living in 1,200 rural communities. The project focused on poor communities where inadequate water supply and sanitation had adversely affected health and quality of life.

| Achievements | Raised awareness of the importance of safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation for individual, family and community health. Trained Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs), health workers, CHV members, local clubs, CBOs and community workers to assist people during epidemics and other widespread diseases. Assisted and trained Water User Groups in planning, procurement, construction management, and the operation and maintenance of water supply schemes. Raised awareness of gender, caste and ethnic minority issues, and implemented a water users’ group strategy. Assessed household hygiene and sanitation conditions through sanitation surveys. Encouraged the participation of women, lower castes and ethnic groups in decision-making processes. |
