Digital Financial Literacy has transformed my life

Digital Financial Literacy has transformed my life

Sarita Chaudhary is a participant of first batch from Dangisharan, Dang. She lives in a joint family of 12 members including her husband, mother-in-law, two brothers-in-law, sisters-in-laws and children. In the meantime, her mother-in-law got problem of kidney stone. Good amount of money is needed to operate which pushed them back.

In this context, she got an opportunity to participate in chapter one “Sampannatako bato” in Samunnati Digital Literacy classes, which was related to her current situation regarding ‘Yathaistitit ko chakra” and “Sampannatako khudkila“. It helped her to realized their position.

She was regular in the digital financial literacy training classes and has learned one after another chapter. In the meantime, the “Income and Expenditure” chapter has provoked her to save curtailing unnecessary expenses.

In the same way, in Chapter 7′ Sahi Krishi Byabasayako Chhanaut” has visualized her to work on her irrigated land of 5 “kattha“. She found herself in a favorable situation regarding her skills to produce off-season agricultural products and selling mechanisms from a website. Her husband has been working on Websurfer company and has good public relations. It has motivated her to move ahead but bringing her husband on board was still challenging.

As time passed, the training class invited participant’s family members as well to discuss their scenarios. In the meeting, they shared that they have been doing subsistence farming, which was insufficient for them to meet increased expenses. Later on, during their family discussion, she convinced her husband to do commercial farming. Now, her husband is involved in farming with her and helps to market the products.

She and her husband are using “Krishi Guru” and “Geo Krishi” applications, which they learned from training. By using the apps, they have accessed information on commercial farming, pest & disease control, and later, their products are displayed on Facebook.

They have saved around Rs. 18,000 per month from the enterprise after meeting all expenses including children’s education and mother-in-law’s medicines. She has been able to return her sister–in–law from Kathmandu to do this business together.

Until now, she is sharing her husband’s smartphone but she has planned to buy a smartphone for herself. In the same way, she has set a long-term financial goal of ten years to buy land and build a permanent house. Meanwhile, has started to save Rs 7,000 monthly at the Gurubaba cooperative.  To meet the goal, she has planned to increase the scale of commercial farming.

She expressed her gratitude towards, the Samunnati Digital Finance Project, which has brought a great opportunity to transform her living and capacitated her to take risks while earning and to set long-term financial goals.
