Activities and Achievement of the Project

QIP started in October, 2003 with joint support from UNICEF, WFP and DFID in four districts namely Dolpa, Humla, Jajarkot and Rukum during the most conflicting situation to provide immediate assistance to 3515 food insecure vulnerable households.

QIP reached 7000 households with 400 MT of rice which helped the vulnerable communities including 1,770 female headed households to secure food for additional 21 days on an average. 95 community infrastructures were created and six trainings were conducted in 24 VDCs of the program districts.

After 2004 October, QIP continued with the sole support from UNICEF. Initially, it was no cost extension for two month. In 2005 onwards, QIP was made more software (training, capacity building) focused and planned as a right based result oriented program;

QIP in 2005 aimed to implement quality education resource package in 222 schools. Conduct Welcome to School campaigns (education for all), train health workers and female community health volunteers (FCHVs) in the program VDCs. All these were done to strengthen government service delivery system which was not functioning properly during the conflict period.

The community was willing to contribute the unskilled labour for the physical construction. Therefore, huge contribution (> 40%) from the community was received during this period.

Quality Education Resource Package were implemented in 216 primary schools, 60 child clubs were formed and mobilized.
More focus was given in girls and DAG education. Girls enrollment in primary schools, retention and completion was given due care.

Out of school children of age 10-14 were also given an opportunity of education by involving them in Child centered Out of School program (CC-OSP).

In 2006, (UNICEF supported QIP and WFP supported PLIC collaborated both thematically and geographically) The student’s enrollment rate was encouraging. Also the enrollment of graduates from the CC-OSP in the school was found very well where above 65 % and girls’ enrollment above 67%.

Out of 23 different modules of QERP 12 modules were implemented in 216 primary schools in the program VDC. Total schools in the program VDCs are 222.

Immunization coverage in the program VDCs was increased from 73.15% to 85% by capacity building and mobilizing VHW, watch groups, FCHVs.

Vitamin A coverage was also increased from 95% to 99% in QIP VDCs.

the ANC 4th visit was 41.46% and PNC 1st visit 27% in 36 QIP VDCs compared to 33% and 18% in previous six months in 6 QIP districts in 2006 More coordination with line agencies was done as a part of strengthening government agencies and mainstreaming the development efforts.

Parenting orientation brought wonderful results. The original aim of PO was to increase awareness to the married couples especially males on their roles and responsibility on child care. However, in the community, males were more outgoing and females were the ones who needed these kinds of information. More females participated in the classes and have now started good sanitation behaviors.

In 2007 Rapport and understanding with district line agencies including DDC, DEO, DHO is very good relation. Local level stakeholders such as SMC, PTA, HMC as well as communities have become more cooperative.

It was found that CC-OSP promoted girl’s education in all districts. 870 (72% CC-OSP graduate) children from 54 centers including 636 (73.5%) girls enrolled into formal schools for the academic session 2064 after completing 10 month CC-OSP classes.

One of the CC-OSP mainstreamed students stood up first position from grade-4 to grade-5 at Subhakamana PS at Raha VDC in Dolpa District shows the learning attitude due to 10 month child friendly teaching learning environment.

WTS campaigning has been successfully completed and the school enrollment NER has increased. Campaigning tools like door to door visit, distribution of invitation cards, community mapping/meeting for enrollment advocacy which applied to other school catchments since 2006 were good enough. Due to this, 100 % children aged between 5-9 years enrolled into school at Saya VDC of Humla, Similarly; above 95% enrollment in Badalkot of Kalikot, Malikathata, Garjyangkot & Guthichaur of Jumla and Syalakhadi & Khalanga of Rukum.

After intervention of the QIP, the NER, retention and completion in primary level is increased by 19%, 10% and 12% respectively in comparison with 2004. The present status of NER, Retention and completion of schools in QIP VDCs maintained at 87%, 79% and 77%.

DPT 3 coverage on an average now is at 93% in QIP VDCs
Vitamin A coverage was also maintained to 99% in QIP VDCs.

On an average, the ANC 4th visit was 41.46% and PNC 1st visit 27% in 36 QIP VDCs compared to 33% and 18% in previous six months in 6 QIP districts in 2006. Few child clubs are found more active i.e. they conducted extra-curricular activities, sanitation campaigning, nail cut campaigning, checking attendance record of teachers, temporary toilet construction by all members of child clubs in their settlement.
